Ranger reports from Nature Notes:

January 1 One of our C. C. C. boys awoke this morning to find a pine martin (Martes caurina origines) snuggled close beside him on the bed. Three of these animals have become close friends of the boys at the Tower Falls side camp. (John Bauman)

March 14 The first meadow lark (Sturnella Neglecta) of the season was seen sitting dejectedly upon the corral fence at the Buffalo Ranch today. Last year the first meadow lark appeared at the Ranch on March 9. (Marie Pearson)

May 12 While returning on foot across the divide from Upper Slough Creek today I came face to face with a large grizzly. The meeting was a complete surprise for both of us and our reactions were mutual. We both stopped abruptly and stared momentarily. The hair rose on his shoulders as he looked me over. I instinctively clapped my hands together and let out a yell which to my entire satisfaction had the desired effect on the bear.  In addition to the Grizzly 5 moose (Alces americanus shirasi) were seen between the transfer and Slough Creek Station. (James A. Bauman)
