Institute Announces Microbes and Global Connections Seminar in Yellowstone

November 17, 2005

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK – Examine Yellowstone in its tiniest details -- the world of heat-loving microbes that inhabit Mammoth Hot Springs -- and how they link to environments around the globe.  The Yellowstone Association Institute is offering a field seminar in which participants will investigate enormous terrace formations, steaming pools, and the microbes living there to learn about a progressive new integration of geology and microbiology which is changing how scientists view life on our planet.

The seminar, taught by Dr. Bruce Fouke, begins on January 13, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. and ends on January 15, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. There will be a classroom component as well as short hikes of up to one mile per day through relatively flat terrain on maintained or snow-packed trails.  Snowshoes, which can be rented locally, are required.

To enroll in this seminar, or to request a catalog with a full description of Institute courses, please contact the Yellowstone Association Institute at PO Box 117, Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190 or call 307-344-2294.  Complete course information is also available at http://www.yellowstoneassociation.org/institute.

Rooms have been set aside at the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel. Call 307-344-5566 for hotel rates and reservations.

The Institute is a nonprofit field school operated by the National Park’s official educational partner, the Yellowstone Association.  The Institute offers a variety of courses in ecology, wilderness skills, and natural history year-round in Yellowstone National Park.
