Yellowstone Birds of Winter

January 13, 2006

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK Eagles, swans, dippers, owls, and goldeneyes color the Yellowstone winter with their song and flight. You’ll learn to identify many of these species, observe their behavior, and explore their fascinating winter survival strategies in classroom presentations and field trips. This course is ideal for beginning to intermediate birders.

The seminar, taught by Katy Duffy, begins on March 4, 2006 at 8:00 a.m. and ends on March 5, 2006 at 4:00 p.m.  Ms. Duffy identifies raptors on the wing and songbirds by sound. She is a licensed bird bander specializing in owls, hawks, and songbirds, and holds an ecology degree from Rutgers University. A resident of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem for more than two decades, she was a naturalist for Grand Teton National Park before becoming the West District Interpretive Ranger for Yellowstone National Park.

The program entails hikes of up to 1 mile per day through relatively flat terrain on maintained or snow-packed trails.

The fee for the course is $150 (Yellowstone Association members get a $10 discount).  Rooms have been set aside at the Super 8 in Gardiner, Montana. Call 406-848-7401 for hotel rates and reservations.

The Institute is a nonprofit field school operated by the National Park’s official educational partner, the Yellowstone Association.  The Institute offers a variety of courses in ecology, wilderness skills, and natural history year-round in Yellowstone National Park.
