The Spring Wildlife Show

March 3, 2006

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK Winter departs slowly from Yellowstone, but with spring comes a wildlife show second to none. The stage is Yellowstone’s Northern Range, which includes one of the world’s great wildlife viewing areas, the Lamar Valley. The Yellowstone Association Institute will be presenting a seminar in which participants will be able to explore this area, which is home to wolf dens full of growing pups, red bison calves frolicking, bear mothers with their young in tow, ground squirrels scampering about, and sandhill cranes setting up their nests. They may even see one of the year’s first elk calves.

The seminar, taught by Jim Garry, begins on May 6, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. and ends on May 8, 2006 at 4:00 p.m.  Jim weaves together natural history, human history, folklore, and myth into spell-binding stories. A naturalist and folklorist, he has spent a good part of the last 37 years in the Yellowstone ecosystem. Since 1980 he has directed Great Plains Lore and Natural History, Inc. His books include This Ol’ Drought Ain’t Broke Us Yet and The First Liar Never Has a Chance.

The program entails easy walking with hikes of 1 to 3 miles per day with climbs up to 250 feet and some off-trail walking.  The class will be based out of the Institute’s North Entrance Education Center in Gardiner, Montana.

The fee for the course is $240 (Yellowstone Association members get a $10 discount).  Lodging is available in Gardiner.

The Institute is a nonprofit field school operated by the National Park’s official educational partner, the Yellowstone Association.  The Institute offers a variety of courses in ecology, wilderness skills, and natural history year-round in Yellowstone National Park.

To enroll in this or another field seminar, or to request a catalog that includes a full description of all summer and fall courses, please contact the Yellowstone Association Institute at PO Box 117, Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190  307-344-2294.  Complete information is also available at www.YellowstoneAssociation.org.
