Yellowstone Comes Alive

March 29, 2006

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK Yellowstone comes alive in springtime and the Yellowstone Association Institute will be presenting a seminar featuring its rebirth around the Yellowstone Lake area. In Hayden Valley, course participants will search for bears recently emerged from their dens and bison just born. On the shores of Yellowstone Lake and at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, they will see geological forces at work. At the Lake Hotel, they can imagine what Yellowstone was like in earlier years. The program may even take in a geyser or two.

The seminar taught by Jim Garry, begins on May 20, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. and ends on May 22 at 4:00 p.m.  Jim weaves together natural history, human history, folklore, and myth into spell-binding stories. A naturalist and folklorist, he has spent a good part of the last 37 years in the Yellowstone ecosystem. Since 1980 he has directed Great Plains Lore and Natural History, Inc. His books include This Ol’ Drought Ain’t Broke Us Yet and The First Liar Never Has a Chance.

The program entails easy hikes of one to three miles per day with climbs up to 250 feet with some off-trail walking.

The fee for the course is $240 (Yellowstone Association members get a $10 discount).  A block of rooms has been set aside at the Lake Hotel.  The hotel can be reached at 307-344-5566 for rates and reservations.

The Institute is a nonprofit field school operated by the National Park’s official educational partner, the Yellowstone Association.  The Institute offers a variety of courses in ecology, wilderness skills, and natural history year-round in Yellowstone National Park.
