  NEWS FROM OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK
by National Park Service

Olympic National Park (Washington) has had more snow this year than any since 1972.  Hurricane Ridge Road, a 17-mile road leading from Port Angeles up to Hurricane Ridge is supposed to open every Friday to Sunday throughout the winter (mid-December to the end of March), but this year, due to a string of Pacific Winter storms, the road has not been open since January 24.  The park's road crew has attempted to clear the road ever since then, but progress has been impeded by numerous storms and high avalanche danger.  On Feb. 25, they discovered a recent avalanche fall crossing the road that was at least 25 feet deep, 100 feet wide, and littered with broken trees and other debris.  Five additional slides were found on Feb. 26.  Park officials are very concerned that Spring thaws, throughout March and April, will increase the threat of avalanches in the park and are advising park visitors to check-in at Ranger Stations and Visitor Centers to obtain the latest avalanche conditions.  With Spring break coming and an increase in visitors, we want to make sure the public is aware of the danger,O said Park Spokeswoman Barbara Maynes.   Backcountry enthusiasts should avoid high country areas and remain at lower elevations and trails until the danger has passed.
