YELLOWSTONE BISON
UPDATE News Brief YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK -- This winter has witnessed the continued needless slaughter of Yellowstone's bison, although the numbers of bison slaughtered thus far -- 17 -- is small compared to the 1100 which were killed during the winter of 1996-97. Some conservation groups this year have been seeking a judicial injunction to limit the number of bison slaughtered. The request, however, has been turned down by U.S. District Judge Charles Lovell of Helena, Montana. In his ruling, Judge Lovell noted that the number of bison slaughtered thus far this winter is small, thanks to the mild weather, and that putting a limit on the number which can be slaughtered is unnecessary. Bison which wander out of the Park run the risk of being captured by the Montana Department of Livestock, who are slaughtering captured bison which have the disease brucellosis. Brucellosis can cause cows to abort their fetuses, and although there is no evidence that bison can transmit the disease to cattle, the DOL insists on slaughtering stray, infected animals. As state and federal agencies continue to seek a solution to the bison problem, the American public has voiced their opinion that the slaughter must be stopped and the bison, the symbol of the American West, allowed to roam free.

| PARK RANGERS BUST
COUNTERFEITERS News Brief from APB Online YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK -- A speeding ticket in Yellowstone National Park led to the arrest of two Oregon residents for possessing counterfeit traveler's checks, the U.S. Secret Service has reported. Deborah Ferguson, 48, and Kevin Danielson, 39, both of Salem, Ore., are being held here without bond in Cascade County Jail on federal charges of possessing counterfeit commercial securities. Ferguson and Danielson were arrested March 7 on the west side of Yellowstone National Park after a park ranger stopped their vehicle for speeding. The ranger saw drug paraphernalia in the vehicle, which led to the search that uncovered nearly 100 sheets of phony traveler's checks and identification document manufacturing devices. The pair had passed at least $20,000 worth of phony checks in the Northwest in the past six months. |
