EAST AND SOUTH ENTRANCES OPEN
by Dr. Bob Bara

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK. (YNET) -- Spring has sprung in the Yellowstone area.  This week has witnessed mostly sunny and increasingly warm weather, as if on cue for the opening of the east and south entrances today.

The only entrance to Yellowstone which is not yet opened is the northeast entrance, the opening of which is contingent upon the clearing of the Beartooth Highway, the gateway to the northeast entrance of Yellowstone.  The Beartooth Highway rises to nearly 11,000 feet, and its heavy snowpack make clearing the road a time-consuming process.  The highway is scheduled to open Memorial Day weekend.

Visitors to the Park will yet see a lot of snow in many areas of the Park.  Also, the high and winding Dunraven Pass road between Tower and Canyon inside the Park is not yet open to automobile traffic.

NEW HISTORIC LISTING IN MONTANA
by National Park Service

MONTANA (NPS) -- On April 30, 1999 the Porter Ranch Barn was listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the official list of the Nation's cultural resources worthy of preservation. In 1908, Frank Porter, a well known logging contractor and farmer, built the Porter Ranch Barn, a large two story wood frame building approximately 95 X 65 feet.

Still standing after 90 years, the enormous building is a local landmark in Flathead County, Montana, and a testimony to Porter's wealth and the durability of the builders. The barn was designed for housing 16 horses, and included a second level for plenty of hay storage. The barn's unique structural features include cedar roof shingles, planed timber and many of the posts and beams are made from the squared timber of a whole tree. The Fish & Wildlife Service maintains the property, now known as the Blasdel Waterfowl Production Area. Although the barn is set back from major thoroughfares, it can be seen from two major highways, towering over all of the buildings in the foreground, a reminder of our connection to the earth. .

  NEW NATIONAL PARKS BILL
News Brief from ENN

A Senate bill sponsored by Sen. Bob Graham, D-Fla., would change the way U.S. National Parks are protected, a park advocacy group said Tuesday. The National Park Preservation Act, S.819, would authorize a dedicated annual revenue source of $500 million to help parks "that have ecosystems, critical habitat, cultural resources or other core park resources that are threatened or impaired." Of that funding, some $350 million would be available to fund projects directed at outside threats to the parks.
