National Park News From Around the Nation

News Briefs

The future of personal watercraft use in the National Park System looks dim, according to a proposal to regulate their use that was published Tuesday in the Federal Registrar. The proposal limits the national park use of personal watercraft to 25 federal recreation and seashore areas and says their use will be reviewed over the next two years at 12 other sites and banned altogether in the rest of the federal park system.  Click here to read the full story from the Environmental News Network.

Rocky Mountain National Park gets new outhouses.  An improved venting system promises to take away much of the unpleasant odor associated with outhouses in national parks such as Rocky Mountain and Yellowstone.  Click here to read the full story from the Denver Post.

Forest Service Release Fall Foliage Prediction: One of the most spectacular times to visit the national forests is in the fall when the leaves are turning and the color can be vibrant. Fall colors this year will be brilliant in the Rocky Mountains and Northeast, subdued along the mid-Atlantic states, and typical in the southern Appalachians and Midwest, according to the U.S. Forest Service. In its annual prediction, Forest Service officials indicate that late summer drought along the mid-Atlantic has caused some trees to already begin losing their leaves and the peak will not be vivid. But fall color in the Northeast, along the Rocky Mountain front range and southern Appalachians should be average to exceptional.  Click here to read the full story from the Environmental News Network.
