1.  How Many Days? -- Determine how many total vacation days you have.  Yellowstone is a long drive from most places in the United States, and the Park itself is very large (2.2 million acres in size).  We recommend a minimum of three days in the Park, not including drive time to and from the Park.  The main season in Yellowstone runs from June to to September.

2.  Map Your Route -- Once you have your dates set, you will need to map your route to and from Yellowstone.   Here are Driving Directions from major cities across the United States to Yellowstone.  You can also view a map of highways in the larger Yellowstone area.

3.  Make Your Reservations -- Now that you have established your dates and route, it is important to make your lodging and activity reservations well ahead of time.  Lodging inside Yellowstone is limited and fills quickly.  Lodging reservations are available both within the Park and at any of the five towns near Park entrances.  The North and West entrances are the most popular and are located at the Park boundaries.  There are also lots of fun activities you can reserve ahead of time, from park tours to fly fishing to horseback riding to rafting and much more.  If you have your dates ready, you can make your reservations now!

4.  Prepare for Your Trip -- You will want to make certain your vehicle is trip-worthy, that you have all the essentials packed, and that you take any and all other precautions and steps that you would take on any long-term family vacation.  Don't forget the camera and the binoculars!  And be prepared for cool weather, even during the summer months.   While you count the days to your vacation, take our Online Tour of Yellowstone and familiarize yourself with Yellowstone's Main Attractions, including geysers, wildlife and waterfalls. You may also choose to purchase a Park Pass ahead of time, and you can keep informed of Yellowstone news through our Newspaper or email Newsletter.

5.  Before You Leave -- Before you take to the road, be sure to check the weather and road conditions in and around Yellowstone.  You will also want to check the weather and road conditions between your hometown and Yellowstone.  Also be sure to double check to make sure that you have everything packed for the trip.
